This scenic town set on hillsides of a fertile landscape will surely make you fall in love. La Orotava is a valley surrounded by the picturesque hills where local people grow mainly bananas, or “platanos” as they call it. Platano is the main crop of Tenerife agriculture. The land is also fertile for wine growing, which has a long history here. In the area you can find several “Bodegas”, or wine cellars, where you can learn more about wine growing, production and enjoy the amazing taste of these volcanic wines.

Casa de los Balcones
La Orotava has always belonged to the richest cities of the island, with a typical population of the higher social classes. This fact is also reflected in the local architecture. Most of the buildings have beautifully carved wooden balconies and interior patios. Among the most outstanding pieces there are Casa de los Balcones and Casa Mendez-Fonseca. Both have beautiful interior courtyards that are open to the public. Besides, Casa Mendez-Fonseca has a small museum where you can admire traditional folk art.
Old churches and authentic monasteries
While walking through the city you can also admire its numerous churches and monasteries . The main masterpiece of this area is the Iglesia de Nuestra Senora de la Concepción situated in the old town. This is a Baroque church with a dome and two towers that was built in the 18th century.
Another church and former monastery of San Agustín dates back to the 16th century. A special feature of this church are its four Roman arches located on the north side of the building.
Shopping in La Villa Centro Comercial
After the sightseeing in the city you can visit La Villa Centro Comercial. Here you can find many shops, restaurants, cinemas, and a hypermarket (Alcampo). Try local delicacies, buy some souvenirs, or just enjoy a Spanish style shopping. The commercial centre also counts with a free parking.
